Psychedelic post-metal trio and recent Pelagic Records
signees, PSYCHONAUT, will release their debut full-length, Unfold The God Man,
on March 6th.
PSYCHONAUT literally came from out of nowhere -- Mechelen, Belgium,
to be precise -- but their debut album showcases truly world class musicianship
and songwriting abilities, heavily influenced by '70s bands like Led Zeppelin
and Pink Floyd, but also drawing inspiration from contemporary heavy artists
like Tool or Amenra. Recorded by Chiaran Verheyden at the renowned Daft Studios
in Malmedy, Unfold The God Man is an intricate concept album tackling
philosophical and existential themes, and ultimately exploring mankind's
re-ascension to a higher level of consciousness. The nearly seventy-minute-long
album contains material from over three years of incessant writing, arranging,
"We've always been interested in religion,
spirituality, and philosophy," comments Stefan DeGraef, who oversees all
guitars and half the vocals in PSYCHONAUT. "We've meditated together, had
long discussions about the nature of life, the origin of consciousness, the
purpose of existing etc. for as long as we've known each other. We share a
common vision and have a connection. We were blessed with some experiences in
the past which fundamentally changed the way we look at the universe and
It comes as no surprise then that there is a lot of
attention to detail behind Unfold The Godman: one such feature is the fact that
the album was recorded with the note A tuned to 432 Hz, because this relates to
the idea that 432 is a multiple of the number 9, which is used in much of the
symbolism to which the band refers.
In advance of the release of Unfold The God Man the band is
pleased to unveil a video for the track, "Kabuddah," noting,
"The videoclip for 'Kabuddah' was recorded at Belgium's finest venue Ancienne
Belgique when we opened for our friends in Brutus on December 14th, 2019. We've
known them since we invited them to play their first show ever with us all the
way back in 2013. More than six years later, Brutus returned the favor and
asked us to open for them in one of the biggest venues in Belgium. We
thought this was the perfect opportunity to record our first video. 'Kabuddah'
is the third song on the album but is actually the second-to-last chapter of
the album concept. In this chapter, the protagonist lets go of the concept of
duality of 'man' and 'god' and embraces the fact that there is only oneness. To
portray the illusion of duality, 'Kabuddah' became one of the heaviest songs on
the album with most vocal parts being screamed, while carrying a very positive
message. Fun fact 1: 'Kabuddah' contains the longest sentence on the album:
'Seven angels on my back whispered secrets of the six-tusked white beast in the
shrine where I manifest the true state of no mind.' Fun fact 2: 'We named the
song after a Buddha-shaped garden gnome that was given to us by our good friend
and roadie Franky Lucas."
Check out "Kabuddah," now playing at Ghost Cult,

PSYCHONAUT's Unfold The God Man will be available on CD, LP,

PSYCHONAUT made themselves a name across the Benelux underground with a raw and compelling live show,
which merges their wall of sound with intense visual landscapes and moody
lighting design. Contrast and variation are the two main anchors on which they
base their musical and visual ideas. Since 2013, they have released two
physical EPs - 24 Trips Around The Sun (2014) and Ferocious Fellowman (2016)
and taken the stages of Desertfest, Rock Herk, and Putrock Festivals.
"Unfold The God Man spans everything in a very heady
way, often creating a unique amalgamation of tones with the highest quality of
songwriting abilities." -- Heavy Blog is Heavy

the case with Iceland’s
Keelrider, who since 2015 have been crafting a stoner metal sound that draws
from a broad set of influences. Tastefully fusing everything from southern rock
to prog by way of grunge, they place an emphasis on strong melodies and odd
time signatures. Rather than adhering to the staid tropes of their scene,
Keelrider pushes forward with their distinct take on heavy, guitar-driven
Things started picking up for Keelrider in 2018 when they
released their debut album North and played their first shows to support it.
This led to an invitation onto Iceland’s
national radio station (Rás 2) to discuss their music. Later that year they won
the Unsigned Showcase Showdown on the world renowned "All Things Metal
Podcast."From there the success
only snowballed as North was rated the 4th best heavy release on Iceland's only
heavy metal radio show, and received coverage from metal music publications worldwide.
With a recharged group of guys ready to take on the world,
Keelrider seeks nothing less than to make a lasting impact on the Icelandic
heavy music scene. As new music gets written and recorded, there promises to be
all manner of growth for the band. With every gear finally in motion, Keelrider
promises to be an unstoppable juggernaut. The band is a force to be reckoned
with in the Icelandic scene and is ready to make their mark on the worldwide
stoner metal scene.

He’s the voice behind multi-platinum
selling albums and heavy metal classics such as “Breaking The Chains,” “In My
Dreams,” “Dream Warriors” and many more! But for the aptly named album
Solitary, Dokken vocalist Don Dokken strips away the metal trappings and takes
center stage as a singular creative force on this acoustic album that includes
both original songs and imaginative reworkings of other’s songs. Dokken’s
powerful singing truly shines throughout these recordings, bringing both fiery
passion and gentle emotion.
To help bring this project to life, Don reached out to
several high-profile musicians including The Firm/Whitesnake bassist Tony
Franklin plus renowned drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa / Sting).
Solitary will be released January 31 on Deadline Music, a
division of Cleopatra Records, Inc, on all digital platforms plus CD and on a
very special limited edition RED vinyl pressing!
Here we are in a new decade, a lot has changed, and a lot
has stayed the same. In terms of Bandcamp goodness, its continuing to stay
great and offering up more than enough great tunes to keep you occupied. Here
are some of my recent recommendations for you all to check out.
Taraban – How the East Was Lost
Pretty blown away with this one. This came up late in 2019
as a mighty high recommendation from some of the other Doom Charts
contributors, even making some end of the year lists. I only got around to
listening to it in mid-January, 2020 and can say I am quite blown away at the
elegantly executed hard progressive rock. Its heavy, trippy, and elegant all in
one package. Potential to grow even better with more listens.
Gypsybyrd – Eye of the Sun
Gypsybyrd ascends the hazy Texas skyline with a commanding bass-line,
reverberated vocal tone, and lysergic groove. A desert caravan of riffs blazing
through smokey rays of bloodshot sun.
Ozymandias - Cake
I’m quite a bit blown away here. Just now finding this in
2020 and really digging on the serrated punk chops harmonized by melodic grunge
and occult noize. Every song elevates the blood pressure as it plays on. Got
that first time feels big time.
The Goners – Demo
The occult-driven, tripped-out garage tones mangle with
metallic riffs, queazy vocals and punk-tinged spirit. Sounds like Southern CA stoner-punk wasted on sweet, Swedish cheeba.
This is right down my alley. Surfy atmosphere, druggy
undertones and bluesy angst all wrapped up with a surly, psychedelic swagger.
Isles of Mars – Isles of Mars
Holy god damn shit!!! What we have here folks is true blue
proto-doom for daze. Finds a way to echo past legends but sounding fresh and
exciting as if it was February 13, 1970 in the United Kingdom. That groove, those
drums, and the uber smooth vocals crooning along to those retro inspired guitar
riffs. Like Graveyard went to the beauty parlor and came out drunk and chic.
Favorite track: Black Tongue.
Pastor – Unveil
Holy hell, this is amazing. A thick layer of proto-doom
pulsing with rhythm and bleeding with charismatic groove. It doesn’t get any
better than this. Mind = blown!
Hot Lava Monster – The End Cometh
The End Cometh is certainly a massive output of hard rocking
blues, heavy on the twang and hearty on the soul. This feels like 2 albums but
maintains its strength through and through.
The Good the Bad and the Zugly – Algorithm and Blues
Fusing the hook-brimmed chants of Kvelertak, the ballad-eyed
chorus’ runs of Jimmy Eat World with a grated punk-rock punch, the GBZ assault
us with a sarcastically accurate portrayal of the algorithmic approach we
scroll along to in our millennial minds on this new album.
Abronia – The Whole of Each Eye
This is touching me in all the right places. The steel guitar
brings an alluring Americana
cosmos, while and enchanting touch. On one song, My wife claimed it could be
the soundtrack to 'Game of Thrones'. She’s not wrong. A very well written and
captivating listen. Favorite track: Cross The Hill.
Moonstone - Moonstone
Moonstone has an ever so faint Sabbath guitar tone riffing
along with its own super heavy, low and slow, captivating ring. Dig it.
ACID MAMMOTH unveil their greasy and devilish sophomore
album 'Under Acid Hoof' in full today courtesy of New Noise Magazine! This
hulking slab of doom epics is coming at you on January 24th through Heavy Psych
ACID MAMMOTH don't joke around when it comes to bringing the filthiest and
grooviest doom metal to your speakers. New album 'Under Acid Hoof' offers a
tar-thick slab of intoxicating, Satan-friendly riffs seasoned with Chris
Babalis Jr.'s haunting vocals. An album made to be played at maximum volume
with a reefer in hand.
“Everything about this new record excites us. “Under Acid
Hoof without a doubt surpasses its predecessor in every way from a creative
standpoint as well as production-wise, and we are really proud of the final
product. We are also very excited and honored to be a part of the great Heavy
Psych Sounds Records roster; it’s a dream come true. The response to the album
up until now has been really positive, and we are grateful to all those who
have supported us so far.” says Chris Babalis Jr.
“Under Acid Hoof” is their second full-length, recorded in
2019, mixed and mastered by Dionysis Dimitrakos of Descent Studios. Drums were
recorded in Dope of Sound Studios in Athens.
It's a direct continuation of the band’s self-titled debut, but darker,
heavier, and fuzzier. The father & son duo on guitars offer a horde of
Iommi-style, fuzz-laden riffs, supported by wicked bass lines and relentless
pummeling. Artwork was designed by Branca Studio.
“Acid Mammoth lead with riffs, worship volume, and plunder
like slow-motion churning madmen.”
“They establish themselves as a band that will help to
define the genre in the future. (...) Acid Mammoth sets the bar high with this
album.“ The Sludgelord
“This is a powerful and addictive experience that demands
your full undivided attention.”
Outlaws Of The Sun
“Be one of the people who can confidently say, “I’ve been
listening to them since Under Acid Hoof”.

ACID MAMMOTH is a doom metal band from Athens, Greece.
The band was formed in 2015 by Chris Babalis Jr. (Vocals & Guitars) and
Dimosthenis Varikos (Bass), good friends since high school, with a deep love
for Sabbath and other heavy music. They were quickly joined by their very good

Acid Mammoth is more than just a band of friends. They are a family. In late

Connecticut stoner rockers BONE CHURCH
share all the details as well as a crispy first track taken from their
sophomore album 'Acid Communion', landing heavily this March 13th on Ripple
BONE CHURCH's new album 'Acid Communion' is an intense,
proto-metal journey through a colonial era New England
village, rife with the evils of witchcraft. The album tells tales of
downtrodden townsfolk, suffering at the hands of a satanic cult. All under the
omnipresent eye of the local church. The Bone Church.
A heavy, blues-laden tale of sonic folklore.
BONE CHURCH is a heavy Rock & Roll band from New Haven, CT. Formed in
2016, they're primarily influenced by the era when rock was transforming into
the earliest forms of heavy metal, but still had its feet planted in the blues.
Their sonic foundation is built upon that of classic bands like Black Sabbath,
Led Zeppelin, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and The Jimi Hendrix Experience; with
elements of doom, metal, and psychedelia incorporated to complete their sound.

Heavy metal/thrash metal legends ANNIHILATOR today debut the
shredding new lyric video for "Dressed Up For Evil." The latest
single comes by way of the band's seventeenth studio album, Ballistic,
Sadistic, set for release January 24th via Silver Lining Music.
Issues founding guitarist, vocalist, producer, and principal
songwriter Jeff Waters of the track, "Evil in the guise of a man; that's
how I would describe the theme in this one. People who have no good in them.
Destroying all in their way with abuse, lies, and negativity. Generally, just
being a nasty human being and ruining lives in the name of money; thinking that
it makes them special. It just makes them evil and a waste of life.
Musically-speaking, this one is as old-school ANNIHILATOR metal as it gets.
It's obvious that the vibe in this tune reminds us of the early days of the
band; even extending back to the demo days from '84-'88. A highlight for me in
this song is the legendary voice of Raven's John Gallagher on backing vocals
Kat Shevil Gillham (Winds Of Genocide). An honor to have John on this record
and his voice helps make this song a killer. Oh, and lots of shred guitar, as
some have been demanding for a while! We hope you like this one... we do!"

PA's excellent heavy hitters, Wrath of Typhon, somehow
passed under my radar for quite a while with their sophomore full-length, 'Kingdom Of Fear'. Originally released in 2017, it
took me over a year to buy a copy and another to actually write this review.
Shame on me, that's all I can say! 6 years in the making, it's been a smooth,
natural progression from the 2011 debut, 'Speak From The Fire'. It still sounds
like Wrath Of Typhon but with a more evolved sound. The only difference is the
"new" bass player, Alan Derrick, although new might be a slight
exaggeration since he's been with the band since 2013.
Not sparing any blushes, these Pennsylvanian hoodlums go for
the balls immediately and never let off until the album is over. By then,
you're wrung out and hung to dry, just as it should be. As before, Wrath Of
Typhon mix their own heavy ass sound with dollops of The Mentors, Motörhead,
heavy metal and punk, at least the attitude of the latter, and as usual this is
amazing. Not standing still though, the guys has pushed themselves to move on a
couple of notches and you can tell.
One prime examples of their progress is the insanely
riff-heavy, ‘Sworn To Die’. Incredibly hooky in all its furious onslaught with
a galloping bass guitar and bludgeoning drums, this one leads the way
immediately. Intense and brilliant ‘E Obsolete’ is full of bee-swarming guitars
and a supertight straightforward full steam ahead rhythm section. The
foundation of ‘Livermore’
is like ‘Orgasmatron’ but sped up a notch. After getting increasingly faster
the song drops in tempo a touch but still hits crushing levels. The choruses in
‘Son Of Sam’ are so hook-laden and reels you in, while the verses are sinister
and uncomfortable in the best possible way. Brilliant! Mid-paced, for being
Wrath Of Typhon at least, ‘Homage’ lurks and sneers til about halfway through.
The all hell breaks loos with a furious guitar solo catapulting the band into
hyper-speed. ‘Lazarus Pit’ is an excellent metal composition which captivates
the listener right from the start. Pulls you in and there’s nothing you can do
The six year long wait was so well-worth since Wrath Of
Typhon has crafted the perfect metal album. The blend between new and old with
bits and pieces of their collective influences has come together in an unholy
alliance, just as metal should be, making ‘Kingdom Of Fear’
pretty damned fantastic! More of this, please, gentlemen, and don’t take six
years until next time. The world needs you!
