Hot on the heels of 'The Sacrament In Accidents' Last Band unleash the EP 'Malcontent'. The 4 songs are not leftovers from the previous recording but brand new creations for the RPM Challenge. Last Band formed in 2009 with the intention to be involved in this challenge and now, 16 years later they partake again. For those not in the know, the RPM Challenge is a creative challenge urging musicians to create and record new music during the month of February.
Pat Paul and Matt Le Grow wrote four poignant and critical social commentaries about the uncertain times we live in and about those who fight back against the chaos, the new world order and, as the band says, malcontent.
The EP starts out with 'Pledge Allegiance' and it is full of Helmet-driven guitars, dissonance and structural chaos. About fake smiles and promises while all of us expendables are ground down to dust. 'Batten Down The Hatchets' follows and favours a less-is-more approach with the bass guitar leading the way. You've had enough, the world is going to shit so you're taking shelter all by yourself watching the world go down the drain. Next up is 'Live Laugh Love' which brings to mind Murder Inc as Pat and Matt pours their hearts out about needing to remove pain as something new is needed. The EP ends with 'Reversal Pact' which is minimalistic musically and guided foremost by the drums. Take this burning world and reverse on the forces causing it, let them taste their own work.
This is such a great piece of art by the super talented Pat Paul and Matt LeGrow. Short yet to the point telling it like it is and not holding back on the words. It's raw and uncomfortable and that's how it should be.
