What bands are you actively involved with?

Iron Jinn

What was the first instrument that you played?

Cello

Tell me about one of your first musical memories?

Classical music around the house, my dad playing piano. Vocalists coming over to sing at home.

What was the name of the first band you were in?

Gewapend Beton

Tell me about the genesis of Iron Jinn.

Iron Jinn started as a Roadburn Project called Iron Chin. Walter Roadburn asked me to put something together for the San Diego takeover, an idea he had where lots of musicians from the San Diego psych scene went to roadburn to jam and he liked it if there were also some Dutch musicians that would bring something to the table and have those two scenes collaborate. So I asked Wout Kemkens to join for it because I’ve always been into his bands earlier and he had strangely never performed at Roadburn before. So after we played our one off, it felt like there was way more in this. We decided to change the name since it was a project we we’re going to invest in together. So there was the start of Iron Jinn.

What inspired the name Iron Jinn?

As said before, the project that pre dated iron Jinn was iron chin. It was like the rough outlines of the band but now adding a ton of depth the Jinn was more favorable than the chin.

Tell me a little about the live performance at the Roadburn Festival 2023 and the magic required to make an exceptional live recording?

It was only our 5th show, the release show of our debut album and the first time with now full member Jarno Van Es on Keys. So it could have gone totally wrong, but instead it was a great moment for all of us. Since we are still very fresh as a band it gives us the freedom to not be too perfectionist about it as well. We can see it for what it is. A band at the starting point of their venture. But that is also a unique moment and we captured that together with an audience that was joining in whilst being totally new as well to the material. Pieter Kloos did an amazing job mixing it as well.

If you could insert yourself into any one band what band would it be and why?

I always think about a certain atmosphere I would want to be able to channel. At the moment the darker Coltrane/ Mccoy thing Magma was doing in the 70’s. Technically also a very interesting band to perform with I think.

Have you ever heard a song and immediately wished you had written it? If so... What was the song and artist?

King Crimson - pictures of a city

Do you have any non-rock/metal musical inspirations?

Mccoy Tyner Coltrane

What’s a non-rock/metal song that you'd like to do a cover of?

Threnody

What band have you played with that has really impressed you with their live show?

We recently saw Alain Johannes and his band. Performing his songs. Before the rock set he would play his acoustic stuff. The man is such a crazy inspired player/singer. And Danava a while back on tour.

Do you have a favorite venue to play at?

Lots of them in different cities but I tend to forget a lot of stuff.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?

I usually walk around the venue with my guitar to find a quiet spot to work on stuff. A lot of warm ups and so on, some singing.

What is your favorite thing about touring?

Getting deeper into the music each night, exploring the material in different ways. You can transform musically if you play enough.

What is your least favorite thing about touring?

Merch cuts assholes and technical problems

Is there a city that you love to hit while on tour?

Really depends on what band you're playing at what moment. You don't see much of the town most of the time anyway.

What’s the weirdest experience you’ve had on the road?

Sleepwalking out of a band apartment somewhere in east germany and waking up in the middle of a courtyard half naked.

The year is 2009. Where are you at and what are you listening to?

I was in my first band Gewapend Beton, playing some sort of hardcore punk. Touring a lot recording a 12 inch ep and listening to The Devil's Blood a lot which I later joined.

What advice would you give young musicians that are just starting out in the music business?

Find your own path in it. Institutes and influencers are not the truth. And the business side of it is kind of sad.

What is an absolute band killer?

Inflated ego.  Too much ambition and drugs.

Have you ever recorded a song that you really didn’t like, but somebody else in the band really did?

Some songs I liked less we might have recorded but never put them out. Usually if one of us doesn’t like it, it won't make the release.

If you were to start your own music festival what would be the name of that festival and who would be the three headlining bands?

We had one: Last Night on Earth. It was about bands reclaiming the night. Peter Pan Speedrock headlined as well as Kadavar another time

What’s the longest time you’ve gone without bathing?

I guess that was on one of our earlier tours but no more than a couple days. And back then we smelled less bad probably

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I’m really bad at math

Is the Fistful of DOOM show in the top 10 of your favorite music podcasts?

I'm sorry to say i'm not a big music podcast consumer (yet)
