A Fistful Of Questions With Emmanuel From Orcus O Dis

What is your full name?

Emmanuel Gonzalez Urrutia

Do you have any aliases?

Yes. Memmy

What bands are you actively involved with?

Orcus O Dis

What was the first instrument that you played?

Guitar.

Tell me about one of your first musical memories?

As a child, my dad used to play his guitar every evening from these books called “Cancioneros”, and every time there was a power blackout in the neighborhood, he would play us songs surrounded by candles that my mom would put all around the living room until the power was back.

What was the name of the first band you were in?

Sirius

Tell me about the genesis of Orcus O Dis.

After my previous band Sirius disbanded, the other guitarist, the drummer and me decided to form a new band with a more aggressive approach. Back on Sirius we used to play heavy metal covers from bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Kiss, etc., so this time we were more influenced by bands from the Gothenburg scene and Finnish bands like Children Of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, Norther, In Flames, etc. So we began playing covers of these bands just for fun until the inspiration came to write original songs.

What inspired the name Orcus O Dis?

I just came out from the dictionary lol

How long did it take you to write and record Post Mortem?

Is hard to keep track of the actual amount of time put into every song. The songs had been written a long time before the actual recordings. Markus and I work from a distance since we live in different cities. I came up with the song “Fobos, Deimos, Enio” in two weeks while rehearsing with the band. Markus wrote “Burn In Hell’ on his own and showed it to the band after it was complete. “Man In Flames” was co-written by Markus and me after I showed him the main idea and he wrote the middle part one time we got together to finish the song. The other two songs were singles that had been written years back.

The guitars were recorded in Markus' house in two weeks. It would’ve taken us less time but we were drunk most of the time and playing video games lol. Drums were recorded in two or three days along with the vocals.

If you could insert yourself into any one band what band would it be and why?

Pantera as a roadie, just for fun.

Massive thanks to Emmanuel for taking the time to answer these questions.  I appreciate it.  If you are in the market for some melodic death metal (and of course you should be) then wrap ye ears around Post Mortem which just happens to be the latest offering from Orcus O Dis.  The album art alone is worth the price of admission.
