Gin Lady ★ Toads & Diamonds Vol. One - Live in Spain

If you've been following Gin Lady over the past decade, you'll know they've never been a band in a hurry. Formed in northern Sweden in 2011 from the ashes of the acclaimed progressive rock outfit Black Bonzo, they gradually moved away from the heavier prog leanings of their former band and carved out a sound of their own—one rooted in classic rock, southern grooves, West Coast melodies and a healthy dose of 70s psychedelia. Seven studio albums later, they've become one of Europe's most consistently rewarding retro rock acts, thanks as much to their songwriting as their reputation for inspired live performances.

"Toads & Diamonds Volume One: Live In Spain" finally captures that side of the band on record—and does it remarkably well.

Recorded during the band's Spanish tour in early 2025, the album focuses mainly on material from the later part of their catalogue. But don't expect carbon copies of the studio versions. These songs breathe. They stretch out, take unexpected turns and occasionally drift into loose, psychedelic jam territory without ever losing sight of the melody. "Far Beyond The Sun" is a perfect example, growing into something even bigger and more immersive than its studio counterpart. Throughout the set there's a natural sense of freedom that only a confident live band can achieve.

The real star of the album, however, is the outstanding sound. Warm, open and beautifully organic, it captures the feel of standing right in front of the stage. Every instrument sits perfectly in the mix, the guitars and keyboards blend into a rich vintage texture, and the rhythm section keeps everything rolling with effortless groove. On top of that, the band's trademark three-part harmonies sound absolutely fantastic, adding even more depth and soul to the performance.

Johnny Stenberg, Magnus Kärnebro, Anthon Johansson, Fredrik Normak and keyboard player Max Sjunnesson don't just play through the songs—they let them evolve. The chemistry between the five musicians is obvious from start to finish, making every performance feel natural rather than rehearsed. You can hear that they're enjoying every minute, and that enthusiasm is infectious.

"Toads & Diamonds" is much more than a live souvenir. It feels like the missing piece in Gin Lady's catalogue, showcasing a band that's willing to push its own material a little further without ever losing sight of what makes these songs so memorable. If timeless '70s-inspired rock, genuine musicianship and a superb live sound are your thing, this one deserves a place in your collection.
