How do you get inspired to write?
It was a combination of a lifetime of reading, and having stories inside of me that were screaming to get out.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
As a rule, I don’t believe in it… a writer can always write ‘something’. If you’re not feeling your current work in progress, switch it up. You’re a thriller writer? Start a fantasy magic/sword story. I find a general genre shift enables me to return with a vengeance with fresh ideas.
What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?
There was another David Darling, that lived in the same area as myself. No relation, nor had I ever met him. He was on the ‘other’ side of the law. Prison, a wrap sheet that is thicker than a novella, and contacts… thirty years ago, I received a series of phone calls asking, “When did you get out?” “Hey, I think you owe me money still.” I had to change my phone number and go unlisted in the phone book.
What are you currently working on?
A small-town suspense thriller called The Property Line.
Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
My agent wanted me to take a break from my military-styled thriller, so I could return from a fresh perspective. She (jokingly) asked for a horror with dark romantic undertones… what the hell? Seriously? That isn’t my genre at all… but I had an idea by the time our conversation ended. Two months later, I’m 40% finished The Property Line. My best work. Ever.
What kind of research did you do for this novel?
Not as much as my last novel, but I did look into NY State Laws, properties and townships near Albany NY. I like to get the facts correct about my settings.
In general, what emotions do you usually wish to elicit with your writing?
I like to bring the reader on a journey with the main character. I like to keep the reader’s stomach a little tense as they finish a chapter and they ‘just have to’ read the next chapter to find out what happens. Set. The. Hook.
Best advice on writing you've ever received?
You can fix anything, but you can’t fix a blank page. Write something. Anything. It can be fixed. At times authors struggle against the white page, and sometimes the page wins.
What is the weirdest/wildest topic or fact that you’ve had to research or uncovered in your research?
Hands down, it has to be the mysteries surrounding ancient Egypt. People power aside… how were 80 ton megalithic stones moved and placed with such precision? We have more questions than answers.
Can you tell us a two-sentence horror story?
The baby monitor crackled to life with my daughter’s voice: “Daddy, there’s someone in my room.” She’s been dead three weeks.
What else would you want readers to know about you?
Even if I won the lottery, I’d still wake up early the next morning and let my fingers do what they’ve always done — give the stories inside me a way to escape.
