Dee Calhoun - Angry Old Man

'Angry Old Man' is Dee Calhoun's fifth full-length, if I can count right, and let’s not forget his 2 EPs as well. And it is his best recording to date, and then some. Each previous release has been very good with Dee trying various styles within them honing in on what fits him best. And the result of this is so tangible on 'Angry Old Man'. 9 songs are on offer and not only are they strong and on point, they tie in so well together creating a beautiful flow. Those of you, like me, who have followed Dee for quite some time knows he always has a lot on his mind but even more so now than ever before as you will shortly see.

The album starts of with 'A Last Cold Kiss' which brings a dark sinister throughout musically while sings about the final goodbye in the sense of our world disintegrating and Mother Nature saying sayonara shitheads. The title track, 'Angry Old Man', follows with a sense of matter-of-fact. What I mean is the lyrics are pretty pissed off and very poignant while the music is fairly level and restrained and the these two contrast work wonderfully together. 'Voodooo Queen' is next up weaving its mesmerizing spell over the listener and acts like a perfect breather in between all the putridness Dee brings forth. 'A Piece From The Shoulder' is pretty laidback musically but listen as Dee is on point about it is being time to bury the cause of all of our troubles and get back on track. 'Rise To March' follows in the footsteps of its predecessor. We have to reclaim what our forefathers fought for and be rid of the infested vermin trying to be in charge these days.

'Give Up The Ghost' retains a darker vibe musically. Dee wants us to open our eyes, stop the illusions and toughen up in order to stop the current worldly insanities. 'VVitch (A Chant)' brings the tempo down acting like another breathing hole yet its hypnotic and mesmerizing approach lures us all in. At the same time it offers ways of overpowering the current outdated and preposterous powers that be. With the title 'K*ll A Motherf*cker' the playing field is wide open but knowing Dee there's no reading between the lines. Although cunning as he is though there's plenty to read between the lines as he refers back to 'A Piece From The Shoulder' in the sense time is much overdue to bury the shit 18 feet deep. The album ends with 'This Damned Human Race' which musically is very much end of the world as are the lyrics. Despite the aid of history we never learn.

Dee really keeps the music level-headed and on straight path pretty much simply alternating 50/50 between surprisingly upbeat music and darker undertones while the lyrics are...pretty devastating in all their accuracy. Like I mentioned in the beginning Dee has finally found his path and the outcome is brilliant, and then some!
