A Ripple Conversation With Pauli From Lost Dogs Of Ultimo

What have been your musical epiphany moments?

Regardless of what the guitarist wants Me and the drummer will play it our way

Talk to us about the song-writing process for you. What comes first, the idea? A riff? The lyrics? How does it all fall into place?

It always starts with beats and drums it’s a layering system with us we usually have some samples and backing track noises. As an experimental Punk band pushing deep into Industrial noises this works we then go with Bass and guitar parts of the song and Lyrics

Who has influenced you the most?

Bands like The MC5, Can and Flip That Groove are great bands that pushed music to the edge. Its always great to find new emerging bands coming up too that’s why we always go and see live music

Where do you look for continuing inspiration? New ideas, new motivation?

I’m always reading and absorbing art and music and as an activists I’m passionate about Indigenous politics and environment so I get motivation from that

We're all a product of our environment. Tell us about the band's hometown and how that reflects in the music?

The Project started in Melbourne Australia after lockdown as my way of reconnecting I went out with a camera and walked the streets day and night to photograph street art culture and graffiti. It was then I put the images together in My studio and started adding soundtracks and songs to the images so it directly reflects I’m the music as I still take Photos and images

Where'd the band name come from?

We are a group of collaborators that I pull together from other bands and projects a mix of Musicians, Artists and Activists from all over Australia and Canada. I’m currently chatting to a vocalist in USA about getting involved we are all very transient

You have one chance, what movie are you going to write the soundtrack for?

I would like to re write the soundtrack for the original Mad Max it would be a lot heavier and very Industrial fully loaded with effects and samples maybe capture some noises from deep space

You now write for a music publication (The Ripple Effect?).  You're going to write a 1,000 word essay on one song. Which would it be and why?

I’d like to think it would be  Police Are On My Back from 1967 by the Equals written by Eddy Grant its a great song fabulous Video by the Equals covered by the Clash on the album Sandanista of course there is social political and race issues in the story so it ticks a few boxes

Come on, share with us a couple of your great, Spinal Tap, rock and roll moments?

Trying to be cool at a gig and I had the idea of climbing on the drummers bass drum to help finish the song dynamically and  I tried to launch myself but landed unceremoniously in a heap

Tell us about playing live and the live experience for you and for your fans?

The feeling of connecting with others through music making the listeners feel the different types of emotions through our song topics of Death, Mental Health and Street life is special we try to be  relatable

What makes a great song?

The theme or topic that you are discussing in the lyrics is a starting point then capturing that with the style or genre of music to push that message across as effective as possible

Tell us about the first song you ever wrote?

A song called Cruizin it was about driving around in a car and the freedom that brings to an 18 year old male in a isolated country town wanting to break away and explore the big wide world just down the road. You can see you can feel it, just over the horizon now I just have to get there lets go!

What piece of your music are particularly proud of?

My favourite song is Driving The Rhythm Of My Mind a song about overcoming mental health and the ebbs and flows that brings with anybody  that have experienced this

Who today, writes great songs? Who just kicks your ass? Why?

Australian Indigenous Hip Hop Artist Briggs or Senator Briggs as we call him here not only is his music solid punchy in your face and dynamic but he gives back and supports emerging artists through his record label

Vinyl, CD, or digital? What's your format of choice?

I like all formats If I’m at home i put on Vinyl or CD i have a great collection if I’m traveling I will use digital its easy and convenient I do like whole albums not playlists  where you get one song then change the artist

Whiskey or beer?  And defend your choice

Pelegrino? seriously I think beer as you can sit on it for longer taking more sips or drinks from the glass where whiskey can shoot down to quick so its not for a relaxing social occasions

We, at the Ripple Effect, are constantly looking for new music. What's your home town, and when we get there, what's the best record store to lose ourselves in?

Plug Seven Record Store a little suburb just outside of Melbourne city great collection of all types of music and great coffee shops nearby to really soak up the Vibe

What's next for the band?

Just about to release our first single of the year in February 2024 and really enjoyed the making of this with some cool Melbourne identities getting involved to collaborate
