A Ripple Conversation With Electric Sons

What have been your musical epiphany moments?

Listening to Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange and completely rearranging what I thought I knew about songwriting.

Talk to us about the song-writing process for you. What comes first, the idea? A riff? The lyrics? How does it all fall into place?

I think most often we start with a snippet of music that grabs our attention for whatever reason, then finding a vocal melody that works and finally shaping that melody into lyrics. Not exclusively that though, sometimes it’s the exact opposite process.

Who has influenced you the most?

Probably our friends and family. I don’t think that’s the answer this question is looking for but 99% of the music that shapes what we like to make was passed to us by somebody we know.

Where do you look for continuing inspiration? New ideas, new motivation?

If you put everything around you into a musical context, there’s interesting things everywhere!

We’re all a product of our environment. Tell us about the band’s hometown and how that reflects in the music?

We are Atlanta, GA, USA based. Especially recently, we’ve brought in more of the blues/RnB from the city into our songs.

Where’d the band name come from?

Both of our dads are musicians, so being ‘sons’ was something we had in common

You have one chance, what movie are you going to write the soundtrack for?

The 5th Element. Insanely fun soundtrack.

You now write for a music publication (The Ripple Effect?). You're going to write a 1,000 word essay on one song. Which would it be and why?

Yebba - October Sky. It’s such a detailed and personal song, as well as being incredibly produced and performed.

Come on, share with us a couple of your great, Spinal Tap, rock and roll moments?

Almost dying on the highway as our van broke down.

Tell us about playing live and the live experience for you and for your fans?

Our live shows are so much fun to play. We try to keep it loose and high energy, love interacting with our fans and getting wayyyy into what we’re playing.

What makes a great song?

Honest lyrics over an interesting melody.

What one single album do you wish that you’d written or performed on, and why?

John Mayer - Continuum would be a great one. The last great guitar album.

What piece of your music are particularly proud of?

Our new one, Black Lotus!

Who today, writes great songs? Who just kicks your ass? Why?

The Shins. Something about James Mercer’s melody choices always delight me.

Vinyl, CD, or digital? What’s your format of choice?

I think CDs are pretty doomed, it’s digital out and about and vinyls in the house.

Whiskey or beer? And defend your choice

Whiskey. There’s more to it- you have to conquer a glass of whiskey or an old fashioned, it doesn’t go down without a fight.

We, at the Ripple Effect, are constantly looking for new music. What’s your home town, and when we get there, what’s the best record store to lose ourselves in?

Atlanta, GA. Criminal Records in Little Five Points!!

What's next for the band?

More songs and more shows!

Any final comments or thoughts you’d like to share with our readers, the waveriders?

I think we said it all- thanks!
