A Fistful of Questions With Mortuary Descent

Texans.  Young bucks!  Conjurors of sonic filth...  Ladies and gentlemen (and I use the term loosely) death metal newcomers Mortuary Descent are the recipients of this edition of Fistful of Questions.

What is your full name?

Mateo Longoria

Do you have any aliases?

Necrobalmer

What bands are you actively involved with?

Just Mortuary Descent for most of us… Our Drummer Dailen plays in a Crossover/Hardcore band called “Executioner” you should check them out!

What was the first instrument that you played?

I grew up playing the drums, there was always a kit set up at my house because of my dad and his past days of jamming in bands… it wasn’t until around a year ago that i started picking up vocals to front Mortuary Descent

Tell me about one of your first musical memories?

My first musical memory goes way back to watching my older brother play the drums, he was really into nu metal at the time and ever since then I’ve been hooked on heavy music

What was the name of the first band you were in?

Mortuary Descent is my first band… it’s been a sick ride so far just jamming it out and making nasty fucking death metal with the guys

Tell me about the genesis of Mortuary Descent.

I was in the process of trying to start my first death metal band with my buddy Cameron from high school when this guy named Seb sent me a dm on twitter asking if i was down to front a band… we jammed a couple times and had a handful of lineups shuffled in and out. It wasn’t until around February of this year that we asked a mutual friend Luis and Dailen from “Executioner” to jam with us and they agreed to join. It’s been a mountain to climb up trying to establish ourselves but we stay motivated and make sure to party just as hard as we work.

What inspired the name Mortuary Descent?

“Funny thing is that before ‘Mortuary Descent’, it was ‘Mortuary Silence’ (pre-Seb Days), when Mateo and Cam decided to get together and jam it out, I thought “Descent” sounded gnarly and cooler, and since then we became Mortuary Descent!

...I also live across the street from a Mortuary…”. - Seb

How long did it take you to write and record Skeletonization?

Honestly not that long at all took us only two days in the studio to record all our tracks and about a month to have it mastered the way we wanted it… We had a really fun time at the studio and would like to take a moment to shout out Conrad from Defiled Crypt for letting us use his kit to track our drums. The Death Metal stays rolling!!

If you could insert yourself into any one band what band would it be and why?

“Bolt Thrower, because they're my favorite OSDM band by far. They don't have one bad song! “ - Seb

“Morta Skuld definitely! Dave Gregor is probably one of my biggest inspirations as a death metal vocalist and it would be a dream to headbang on a stage with them or even share a stage with them” - Mateo

“Suffocation because they pioneered slam and and have the perfect mix of technicality and brutality.” - Luis

Have you ever heard a song and immediately wished you had written it?  If so… What was the song and artist?

“Liege of Inveracity by Suffocation” - Mateo

“IVth Crusade by Bolt Thrower” - Seb

What band have you seen in concert that has really impressed you with their live show?

“Cannibal Corpse puts on a mean ass show along with Obituary and Frozen Soul” - Mateo

“Cannibal, mostly due to my absolute lack of exposure to shows growing up. I never grew up around that culture but I’m glad Cannibal was among one of my first real shows.” - Luis

The year is 2012.  Where are you at and what are you listening to?

“Probably in school listening to slayer on my headphones” - Mateo
