Tuesday's Zen - Les Gars

HOT NEW BANDS ON WINSTONS ZENDAR

Formed in February this year Canadian trio Les Gars (Vello Verder, Jon Hawkes, and Marc Delparte) wasted little time in upping sticks and bringing their whiskey soaked garage rock to this side of the Atlantic.

And it looks like a wise move. Les Gars (“the guys” in French) embrace the low budget, fuzzed out production values that made The Libertines seem like a rough stone in a puddle of musical honey not so many years ago. Combine that with growling Stones-a-like riffs, basslines as deep as tramps spirit, and a lyrical tendancy to explore the lifestyles of the under-privileged and bemoan the modern condition and there’s enough early potential in the Toronto threesome to suggest they might just add themselves to a growing list of North American rock that sounds English and sells over here accordingly.

A well received summer residency at Oxford St indie club Metro, won’t do their reputation any harm, In fact it’s already rewarded them with a tour of some of the UK’s more reknowned smaller venues taking in Glasgow’s King Tuts, Camden’s Proud Gallery and interestingly Battersea Power Station along the way. Judging by the reaction to their “attention grabbing” sets everything is in place for this band to make it big in Blighty.

The debut EP La Physique is available now for download from eMusic, and the guys (see what I did there) are confident of a physical release on their own Believe label very soon. For now you can pick up a copy at any of their forthcoming gigs, see the bands MySpace for details.
