A Ripple Conversation With Ravenfangs

What have been your musical epiphany moments?

Definitely when we play our first gig, when we were kids or watching our fav bands play when we were young.

Talk to us about the song writing process for you. What comes first, the idea? A riff? The lyrics? How does it all fall into place?

It will usually be Marco who writes something on the acoustic guitar and then we all add our bits to it and turn it into a Ravenfangs song, or sometimes we just jamming and at the end of it, we have a couple of songs down.

Who has influenced you the most?

We all have different taste in music, but definitely all the rock classics such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Sex Pistols and others.

Where do you look for continuing inspiration? New ideas, new motivation?

As a band, we just keep it real and if we hear something out there that can be included in our music we take it in our own way.

Straight Rock N roll music.

We're all a product of our environment. Tell us about the band's hometown and how that reflects in the music?

Our hometown of London has always been a diverse area with so many different cultures and has always been a staple for punk music. Many of the punk bands that started in London have influenced so many different bands such as us.

There’s lots of variety here in London so we can one night be watching a Psychedelic Rock band and the next a Punk or Funk band. So, yeah, there’s quite a lot going on in our hometown.

Where'd the band name come from?

Our original band name was ‘Rottenfangs’ but we decided that we wanted to change it slightly but keep it similar so when brainstorming ideas we came up with ‘Ravenfangs’.

You have one chance, what movie are you going to write the soundtrack for?

We will have to make our own movie as I believe our music is too unique for most films. If pressed, Will, our lead guitarist, would say ‘’Forrest Gump’’, our drummer, Simon, ‘’Terminator’’ while our Frontman, Marco, would go with ‘Trainspotting’’.

You will have to meet us one day to ask us why these movies.

You now write for a music publication (The Ripple Effect?).  You're going to write a 1,000-word essay on one song. Which would it be and why?

Marco: - I Am The Walrus by The Beatles because I like the instruments and the way the lyrics were written and I can make a story out of it. I’m not really into politics or stuff like that so I rather go for something simple that can bring an escape from reality.

Will: - Hurricane by Bob Dylan, not only for its instrumental excellence but the emotive story of the lyrics. It’s a timeless song and still, sadly, relevant to today’s rife culture of racism and police power trips.

Joe: - Has to be Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine, the song has so much depth to it surrounding so many issues such as immense police brutality during the time but which also greatly resonates still to this day.

Simon: - Stairway To Heaven because there are a lot of themes to write about (melodic and emotional)

Come on, share with us a couple of your great, Spinal Tap, rock and roll moments?

We are living a Rock N Roll lifestyle so maybe this interview is it!

Tell us about playing live and the live experience for you and for your fans?

The moment we put our feet on stage is like fire. You can feel everyone's energy and the moment we play our instruments the resonance is like being on a psychedelic trip where you can see and feel everyone around you and feel their energy. It's just a Magical Mystery Trip that we wish could last forever

What makes a great song?

Reality, Honesty, Rage & Love.

It’s all about energy.

What one single album do you wish that you'd written or performed on, and why?

Joe: - Where You Been by Dinosaur Jr. as that is one of my all-time favourite albums, I love every song on that album so much.

Will - Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. Spontaneous jamming and the amount of creativity makes it one of my favourite albums.

Marco - Close To The Edge by Yes.  I love that instrumental sections and all of the instruments plays some really good weird chords that make you feel like you're in another dimension. The lyrics are like a dark fairy tale.

Simon: - AM by Arctic Monkeys because I love Matt Helders' drumming on that album.

What piece of your music are you particularly proud of?

All of them.

Who today, writes great songs? Who just kicks your ass? Why?

Marco - For me, Mister Alex Turner has always caught my attention. There’s no single song of his I think is bad even if I don’t like it.

Joe - IDLES

Will - I will say Marco our frontman is very inspiring to see how quickly he can write a song and his work ethic has taught me a lot.

Simon - Dave Grohl Because he is a genius songwriter.

Vinyl, CD, or digital? What's your format of choice?

Vinyls will always win. But, in the era we live in we have to adapt to digital and cd’s.

Whiskey or beer?  And defend your choice

Joe - Beer is disgusting... absolutely disgusting. I’m sorry so have to say whiskey.

Simon - Guinness because I like the taste and I get to embrace my Irish heritage

Will - I love both, but I struggle to enjoy from past experiences.

Marco - I don’t drink alcohol at all. A cup of tea at parties or a tropical drink, when at the pub, or just simple water is the best for me.

We, at the Ripple Effect, are constantly looking for new music. What's your home town, and when we get there, what's the best record store to lose ourselves in?

In London, there’s a few. One called All Ages Records, which is an independent punk record store in Camden, and obviously Rough Trade and Banquet Records.

What's next for the band?

Relentless gigging & a UK Tour as soon as Covid Ends. Our 1st music video will be out soon and our forthcoming EP will be out by summer.

Make sure to keep an eye on all of our social media channels to be first to know about our current and future plans.
